What are the Reduced EDT Driving Lessons?
Reduced EDT (Essential Driver Training) lessons are a shortened version of the standard EDT program for learner drivers in Ireland, designed and managed by the RSA ,This program is available to drivers who already hold a full driving license from another country, allowing them to complete just six mandatory Driving lessons instead of the usual twelve, if eligible you can also bypass the 6 month rule enabling you to apply for the driving test immediately once you have completed your 6 hour reduced EDT Driving lessons.
To qualify for reduced EDT lessons, you must:
- Hold a valid full driver’s license from a recognized country.
- Exchange your foreign license for an Irish learner permit.
- Provide proof of eligibility to your Approved Driving Instructor (ADI).
The six reduced EDT lessons focus on critical driving skills and road safety, ensuring drivers adapt to Irish driving regulations. Once completed, your instructor will update your progress on the MyEDT portal, enabling you to book your driving test.

checks, including checking the roadworthiness of
the vehicle; and

Correct Positioning more complex situations

During this session your ADI should make sure that you can
correctly position your vehicle on the road for the action

Anticipation & Reaction
During this session your ADI should make sure that you:
know how to scan the environment for potential
hazards; and
can identify and respond appropriately to potential

Sharing the road
During this session your ADI should make sure that you can
drive with due care and attention for the road and traffic
conditions. This includes taking appropriate actions when

Changing direction more complex situations
During this session your ADI should make sure that you can:
carry out observational and scanning tasks when
turning left and right;
negotiate junctions; and
change direction in more complex and challenging

Speed Management

regulate and maintain good control over the speed of the
